Psalm 51: a good Psalm for when you're in a repentant mood. Good verses. Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me. And God does not desire burnt offerings, but a broken and contrite heart.
Isaiah 58:1-12: The people say we're fasting. God says you serve your own interest on your fast day and oppress your workers. God says, is this not the fast I choose: to loose the bonds of injustice, to let the oppressed go free. To share your bread with the hungry and take the homeless into your house.
Matthew 6:1-6,16-21: when you give alms, don't let your left hand no what your right is doing. When you pray, go into your room and pray in private. And when you fast, don't look dismal, so people know you are fasting. God knows what you do, so don't broadcast to everyone. Where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.
